Dr Joanna Thornborough
Policy Adviser (Higher Education and Skills)
British Academy

I am a Policy Adviser in Higher Education and Skills at the British Academy. The British Academy is the UK’s leader for the humanities and social sciences. The policy and research work which we undertake applies the insight offered by the breadth of excellence and expertise of our Fellows and researchers to policy issues for public benefit and societal wellbeing. As a Policy Adviser my work has addressed the skills developed by the arts, humanities, and social sciences and their contributions to the economy and society. I have also focused on postgraduate research students and early career researchers, as well as research culture more broadly. Most recently I have been involved with the Academy’s work looking at the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and how we can shape a better future for people, the economy, and the environment. Prior to joining the Academy in 2018, I worked as Policy Officer for postgraduate research students and in Academic Registry at the University of St Andrews, whilst also tutoring in history at that university. My own academic background is in Mediaeval History, in which I completed my PhD in 2015.
